On November 8 a German armistice commission was received by Marshal Foch in his private railway coach, which served as his headquarters, at Compi猫gne. Once the German army leaders were informed of the conditions of the armistice, they argued that death in battle was preferable to humiliation in the peace table. Then again, on November ten, Kaiser William abdicated and fled for the Netherlands, and also a new civilian govt declared its acceptance of the Allied conditions.
